Austrian Cake Delivery Across the UK: How We Bake, Pack and Ship from Our London Bakery

Austrian Cake Delivery Across the UK: How We Bake, Pack and Ship from Our London Bakery

How we bake, pack and ship handmade Austrian cakes to any UK postcode from our small bakery in Islington — the freshness rules we won’t break, the packaging problem we solved, and how the whole delivery operation actually works.

Made Fresh, Every Morning, in London

Our bakery sits 5 minutes from the restaurant at 20 Camden Passage in Islington, London. It opens at 7am, seven days a week. If you order a Sachertorte for Wednesday delivery, we bake it on Tuesday morning. It’s genuinely that simple, and it’s the single principle that everything else at Kipferl is built around: your cake was made for you, on the day it needs to be, by a real person in a real bakery.

We don’t work from frozen stock. We don’t batch-bake ten Sachertortes at 5am and hope they all sell before the week is out. We don’t use premixes, pastry-arm cheats, or any of the ultra-processing shortcuts that let big commercial bakeries scale. It’s slower, more work, and more expensive. It’s also the only way we know how to do it.

You can shop the full range in our Austrian cakes collection, or read about how we deliver on our UK cake delivery page.

Real Austrian Recipes, Not “Austrian-Style”

Every cake we bake is a proper Austrian recipe — the kind you’d find in a Viennese Konditorei or a family kitchen in Tyrol, Burgenland, or Styria. Not “Austrian-inspired”, not “Austrian-style”, not a translation via a supermarket test kitchen. Real recipes, most of them going back generations.

Some are internationally famous:

  • Sachertorte — Austria’s most iconic chocolate cake, from the 1832 Viennese original
  • Esterhazytorte — hazelnut and buttercream, from the Esterházy family kitchens
  • Mozart Torte — chocolate, pistachio and marzipan, an homage to Salzburg’s most famous son
  • Kipferl Torte — our own signature pistachio and milk chocolate cake, developed in the bakery

Others are quieter regional specialities that don’t often make it out of Austria:

  • Maronitorte — a chestnut cake from the alpine tradition
  • Haustorte — a gluten-free walnut cake we bake with organic walnuts
  • Gugelhupf — the traditional Austrian marble bundt cake
  • Linzer Torte — the oldest recorded cake recipe in the world, dating to 1653

Because we started as a restaurant in 2010 before we started shipping cakes nationally, the recipes came first. The delivery operation grew around them, not the other way round.

The Packaging Problem — And How We Solved It

Here’s the honest truth about cake delivery: it is not an easy task. Buttercream slides. Ganache melts. Sponge dries. Cream fillings need chilling. The parcel gets rotated, dropped, and left on a doorstep in the sun. If you’ve ever ordered a cake online and received something noticeably worse than what you saw in the photo, this is why.

Solving it took us years, and it’s genuinely the reason we can serve the whole country from a small London bakery. There are three parts to it.

1. Recipe-level choices

Every Kipferl cake shipped nationally is designed to be ambient-stable — meaning it doesn’t necessarily need refrigeration in transit. That’s a recipe decision, not a packaging one. It’s why we use ganache, marzipan and chocolate finishes rather than fresh-cream frostings, and why our fillings are chosen for structure as much as flavour. Some cakes we love making for the restaurant simply don’t ship, and we’ve made peace with that.

2. Structural packaging

Each cake goes into a rigid inner box, cut to size so the cake can’t move. That inner box goes inside an outer shipping carton with structural inserts that absorb impact and keep the cake perfectly upright regardless of how the parcel is handled. We tested countless configurations before we settled on the current one. It’s over-engineered, and we prefer it that way. In the hotter months we use ice packs and aluminium sleeves for many cakes to make sure the chocolate doesn't melt on the way.

3. Timing discipline

Cakes are baked the day before dispatch, packed the morning of dispatch, and collected by our courier partner the same day. Total time from oven to your doorstep is usually 24 to 48 hours — well within what a properly made Austrian torte can handle without losing anything.

The result: when you open the box, the cake looks the way it did when it left our bakery. Not “close enough”. The same.

How UK-Wide Delivery Works

We ship anywhere in mainland Great Britain via DPD next-day. You choose your preferred delivery date at checkout, we bake accordingly, and DPD does the rest.

The practical details:

  • Delivery days: Tuesday through Saturday
  • Order cut-off: 5pm the day before dispatch for standard orders
  • Coverage: any UK postcode, including Scotland and Wales
  • Northern Ireland & the islands: possible on request — contact us for options
  • Tracking: full DPD tracking with a one-hour delivery window on the day
  • Not home? DPD’s “leave with a neighbour” or “leave in safe place” options work fine — ambient packaging means no rush

For the full policy including bank holidays and cut-off times, see our delivery information page.

Same-Day Delivery in London

If you’re in London and it’s a last-minute occasion — a forgotten birthday, an apology, a spontaneous celebration — we can often deliver same-day across most London postcodes. Order by 12 noon and we’ll do our best to get it to you before the day is out.

You can order our range of same day cakes now directly online here:
Same day delivery cake collection.
Alternatively we can arrange same-day London delivery if you call us directly on 020 7704 1555 (option 2) or email shop@kipferl.co.uk — we’ll confirm availability, take payment, and dispatch. It’s a manual process on our side, but it works.

For Every Occasion

Most of our cake orders are for a specific occasion. The three biggest categories:

Birthdays

Our birthday cake collection is the most popular way to browse — Sachertorte, Kipferl Torte, Mozart, Esterhazy, or a personalised celebration cake, all shipped to any UK address on your chosen date. Choose the delivery day, add a message, done.

Celebrations & Personalised Cakes

For anniversaries, weddings, christenings, and other milestone moments, our celebration cake range includes personalised decoration — hand-piped names, dates, and messages on the top of a proper Austrian torte. See also our heart-shaped cakes for Valentine’s Day, engagements and Mother’s Day.

Dietary Needs

Around a quarter of our range is naturally gluten-free or vegan — not compromised versions of standard cakes, but recipes that were built around the ingredients from the start. Browse our gluten-free cake collection and vegan cake collection.

When Things Go Wrong

Shipping thousands of cakes a year, occasionally something goes wrong. A courier misroutes a parcel; a cake arrives on the wrong day; very rarely, a box takes a hit that shouldn’t have been possible. When it happens, we replace or refund. Full stop. Email shop@kipferl.co.uk or call 020 7704 1555 and we’ll make it right.

What we don’t do is hide behind small print. If the cake didn’t arrive in the condition you expected, that’s on us, not on you. That’s how we’ve operated since 2010 at the restaurant, and it’s how we operate for online orders too.

After the Cake Arrives

Once your cake is in your kitchen, a couple of things worth knowing: let the cake come to room temperature before serving if it’s spent time in the cold. We wrote a longer guide on this: how to store and serve your Austrian cake

Do you ship to Scotland and Wales?
Yes — anywhere on the UK mainland via next-day DPD, same service as delivery to London or the South East.
