The autochton Austrian red grape variety Zweigelt was created by Dr. Zweigelt by crossing the – also autochton – varieties St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch in 1922, so just over a hundred years ago. After graduating viticulture school and gathering practical experience in New Zealand and Germany, he returned home and at just 28 took over the family winery in 2011. Today he farms 24 hectares of vines — roughly 30% white, 70% red — across some of the region's most distinguished sites: Gabarinza, Ungerberg, Altenberg, Heideboden and others.
